Not if it stays on private property. A container set entirely on your own driveway, yard or parking pad needs no permit at all — that covers most of our deliveries. The moment it has to sit on the public right-of-way instead — a street or a sidewalk — who issues the permit depends on where you are. Inside the City of Pasadena itself, it is the City's own Public Works permitting process (a “Storage Container Application” through the City's mypermits system; no specific fee is published, so we don't print a number as gospel — check current requirements by calling the City directly). In unincorporated Altadena, which has no city government of its own, it's Los Angeles County Public Works instead, via its Drop Box (Roll-Off Bin) Permit process on EPIC-LA; the neighboring incorporated cities we serve — South Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendale and Temple City — each have their own city government instead. This is a legal and practical issue as much as a policy one. Paint, fuel and oil, and chemicals and solvents all have to stay out of an ordinary landfill load. California also runs real, active statewide bans on two categories in particular, per CalRecycle's own list of wastes banned from the trash: batteries of every kind, and electronics such as TVs, monitors, computers and cell phones, both handled under DTSC's Universal Waste rules — those have to be recycled or sent to a certified facility instead. Waste tires never go in a dumpster either; California's own point-of-sale recycling fee means those go to a certified tire recycler. Yard waste goes in its own box, and that box has a different exclusion list of its own: no treated or pressure-treated wood, no plastic planters, no fertilizers or chemicals, and no bagged household trash. Asbestos never goes in a container under any circumstances; it needs a licensed abatement contractor, and it is a genuine consideration in Pasadena's and Altadena's older housing stock, much of it from the early 1900s. Yes. The real seasonal hazard here is wildfire and Santa Ana wind season, roughly September through December. The Eaton Fire in January 2025 is the sobering local benchmark — one of the most destructive wildfires in California history, and it burned through large parts of neighboring Altadena, the very community our own yard sits in. We do not remove actual fire or ash debris ourselves; that is hazardous material handled through official government programs, not something a private dumpster company should touch. What we do instead is support the honest rebuild that's underway now: new-construction debris from homes going back up on cleared lots, and general property or brush cleanup for fire-adjacent land elsewhere in the service area. Often not, but it is the right question to ask, especially on tighter older lots or hillside properties without a wide paved drive. A roll-off truck needs roughly 60 feet of clear space to work in, about 25 feet of overhead clearance while the box is tipping off, and a flat hard surface such as a driveway to set down on. A tight lot, low tree limbs, overhead service drops or on-street parking can eat into all three.
